Material library
TRAFOLO comes with 2360 core materials from 60 manufacturers and one research lab, and 48 general materials. They are in Global Materials on the Materials tab: type a name into the search box (1) and Copy (2) the material into the project.
What the core materials hold
| Data | Materials | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| B-H curve [T, A/m] | 1354 | A non-linear core that saturates (B-H tab). |
| Complex permeability μ′, μ″ over frequency | 192 | Frequency-dependent permeability in Harmonic and Inductance runs; the core loss comes from μ″ (Complex μ tab). |
| Core loss table P(f, B) | 1497 | Measured losses; Calculate Coefficients fits the Steinmetz coefficients to them (Core Loss tab). |
| Steinmetz coefficients Kh, m, n, Ke | 1720 | The core loss after the field solution: from the flux density amplitude and frequency in harmonic runs, from dB/dt in transient runs. |
| Thermal Coefficients of the core loss | 85 | Core loss that changes with the core temperature. |
| Density, Heat Conductivity, Heat Capacity | 2360 | Heat transfer runs. Where the source gives none, a typical value of the material family is used; the Reference says "estimated" (892 materials, mostly thermal values). |
| Laminate Thickness, Stacking Factor | 1201 | Laminated cores (sheets and tapes). |
Not every material holds every kind of data: 533 hold only their permeability. A marker at the end of a row flags missing data; its tooltip says what is missing: yellow circle (3) Missing B-H Table, red triangle (4) Missing Steinmetz Coefficients, orange flame Missing heat transfer data. Check the tabs of a material before you rely on it, and add the data your run needs: see Core Properties and Models.
Manufacturers
The number of core materials per manufacturer, and how many of them hold each kind of data. Names as in Global Materials; some carry the test temperature or frequency range, for example Ferroxcube 3C90 100C or Baosteel (WISCO) 18QG080 50-60Hz.

Where the data comes from
The Reference field of each material names its source: a manufacturer datasheet with its year (1300 materials), a published material data collection (1049), or a measurement report or manufacturer publication (11). Datasheet values hold for the datasheet's test conditions; check the temperature and frequency range against your design.
Credit: many core materials come from the open-source material database of OpenMagnetics (MAS on GitHub); their Reference reads OpenMagnetics, as for Ferroxcube 3F3 100C above. We thank the OpenMagnetics team for publishing the data.
General materials
48 materials for windings, shields, insulation and cooling: metals such as copper, aluminum, silver and brass; insulation, potting and PCB materials such as epoxy, FR4, PTFE and mica; ceramics; transformer oil, water, thermal paste and air.
Add your own materials with Add New Material (5), or start from a library material with Copy Material (6). They are saved for your Windows user and appear in Global Materials in normal type; the materials that come with TRAFOLO are in bold.
